Let People Dress Raggedy
I grew up in a low income household so my idea of “good fashion” has always been whatever the hell I can afford to wear. I didn’t do expensive, brand names, fancy jewelry or designer handbags. Thankfully, I also lived in a place where school uniforms are the norm and there was no mounting pressure to wear the latest trends to impress your friends on the way to Physics class. Everyone dressed the same. For this reason, the idea of shifting fashion trends has always intrigued me. You know, each season dropping in, bringing a series of environmental changes but also a host of “new” and unique ideas about what’s en vogue. Maybe this time around it’s chunky sneakers, low rise jeans, chaps (yikes!) or corsets as tops.

Nail Influencers
The trend started as a sneeze and became viral. We’ve all been enticed to click on a thirty-second trend video in twenty-twenty. Amung the countless TikTok challenges and makeup eye flair, there's a certain kind of trend that could live out it’s last days which is the impossible-nail-tutorial-that-one-can-do trend. You’ve seen it. I’ve seen it. I fell victim to the burash of cubical mania — the colors and all of the eyegasmic glitter. But guess what? No one can do it.

Death to Denim. Top Story - January 2021.
My grandmother grew up in a small town in Sonora, Mexico, living with 10 siblings. She was the eldest daughter, so she was in charge of ironing her brothers’ jeans. (Exhibit 478 to answer the call: Unionize Eldest Daughters. I’m getting it tattooed under my left buttcheek. If all you who know the eldest-daughter-experience want to get a matching one, truly, let me know.) The iron was made of iron, heated over coals, to flatten the rough, coarse material of small-town Mexican denim. She hated ironing all those tough jeans. As soon as her own Mexican-American daughters were old enough to iron, and the iron itself was modern enough to not be made of iron, she taught them and left them to iron their father’s clothes.

When were fatpants banned?
I was a major raver in the late 90's into the early 2000's, and quickly lost interest once I cleaned up from the cornacopia of drugs necessary to handle large groups of people. I must admit though, I do miss the never ending nights dancing with unlimited energy and massage trains. (Oh those wonderful massage trains, where people resembled a PG version of the human centipede.) No suprise, this trend continued, although now it seems the uniform has had some costume changes. When I frequented the many emptied factories or underground night clubs, fat pants and soothers were the standard for anyone addicted to bass and hallucinogens. Even though the drugs seem to be the same the clothes have diminished into what looks to be stripper costumes brought to you by the colour neon and vinyl.

The Unyielding, Unflattering Denim Trend
I lie awake at night, staring at the swirls on my ceiling, wondering what the hell happened at Target today. I walked in around ten in the morning, prime time to shop for one specific thing and ending up with ten other things, while forgetting the one thing I needed. The nostalgic smell of stale popcorn and name brand coffee wafted across my skin as I set forth toward the clothing section, the first place a young woman goes when she needs some avocados and a loaf of bread.
