The Tragic Downfall of Light Gun Games
(Intro) One of the most enjoyable and sought-after experiences I looked for growing up and going to arcades were light gun games. Machines that put you front and center either fighting off criminals, potential worldwide disasters, or zombies created by an evil mastermind wanting to take over the world. And although arcades were the premier location to play most of this genre, there were other ways to experience this style of video game, albeit in a heavily compromised way. But, as the market for home consoles grew in the early 2000s, the need or even desire to find an arcade to experience these games diminished. To the point, that at least here in the states, arcades are still around but provide a much different experience than they once did. Places like Dave & Buster’s, Apex Entertainment and more focus on arcade games with the goal of winning tickets to cash in for prizes. Whereas years prior, those kinds of games certainly did exist, but there was a stronger emphasis on just playing games and experiences you couldn’t get anywhere else. There was no prize, no immediate gratification other than the experience itself. And maybe being allowed to stay on the machine until you lost, too. And light gun games were certainly at the top of the arcade food pyramid. Next to other genres, like classic racing games, and fighting games. So today, I wanted to just have a conversation about the light gun genre as a whole; go over some of its history, which games really gave this genre the popularity it deserved back in the day and ultimately why light gun games fell out of favor in an arcade setting. They’re still around don’t get me wrong, but good light gun games, that have tons of replay value, are challenging but feel fair, and ultimately give you that classic arcade experience have had a tragic downfall.

You’re Better at Tarkov Than You Think
(Intro) I can’t be the only one who has moments when playing Tarkov that makes me go, man, am I really that bad at this game? Whether it’s poor positioning in a fight, completely whiffing an entire magazine of ammo, or letting the scavs have their way with me, speaking only for myself here, there are a lot of times especially recently where something happens in Tarkov because I make a dumb decision and I beat myself up for it. It's this, unfortunate downward spiral because Tarkov is the kind of game that it is; this cycle of playing the game, losing, getting upset at both the game and yourself, putting it down for a little while and then coming back to it because you can’t stop playing. And as someone who has been playing for eight years, allow me to be the first person to say that if you have a similar mindset or this resonates with you even just a little bit, you aren’t as bad as you think you are in Tarkov. In fact, I would go so far to say that you’re much better than you give yourself credit for. This game isn’t a single straight road. There are tons of twists and turns; places to veer off and other roads you can merge onto at any time. And just because you might be weak in one area of EFT doesn’t mean you don’t excel in others. All I’m trying to say is give yourself some more credit when it comes to Tarkov. No one is perfect, and if you’ve been playing for any length of time, compare yourself now to when you first started. You’ve come a long way. And you’re only going to keep improving.

Do Twitch Drops Ruin Tarkov?
(Intro) It’s been about fifty days since Tarkov went 1.0. And since then, we’ve had a lot of opportunities to acquire free gear and items from all the different Twitch drop events that have occurred since the last wipe. Anyone who engages with this system benefits from it; players and viewers of Tarkov content on Twitch get to earn some free stuff by just watching, and those who are steaming the game benefit from lots of people tuning into their streams and hanging out. And while the drops this go around have been a little more substantial than they have been previously, a thought popped into my head about a week into the event. Free gear is cool, but does it ruin the experience of playing through Tarkov? And what I mean more specifically, there is obviously a specific progression curve built into the game. You do quests, level up and earn more powerful stuff at the traders the deeper you get into the game. But all of that kind of goes out the window when you open a box, and it has a full kit with powerful ammo ready to be thrown on and used. Most people are probably completely fine with the drops, and I can understand why. However, with the most recent wipe being the literal 1.0 release, have drops for Tarkov ruined that experience for everyone, especially players jumping into the game for the first time?
