Photo by Jeanne Menjoulet Social Media, ranting with your friends and all the talking heads, the news is unavoidable. For sanity purposes, I’m trying my best to separate from the downward cycle. Unfortunately, one narrative truly disturbs. It says the shutdown of the country is an elaborate exaggeration for the purpose of unseating the President in November. Somebody should tell that to the 47,000 dead Americans, but there is another aspect that protestors are overlooking.

Nonni Exuded Peace and Contentment while having Plenty of Smarts
“Two years ago, this shy little miss came to us directly from Italy. She seemed to fit right in, and has distinguished her stay in Classical High School by her good scholarship. We who are acquainted with know her as an excellent little friend, always ready to give any help she can when it is asked for, yet too shy to intrude. Anna says she likes America, and our school very much but some day hopes to return to her beloved native Italy.” So says Nonni’s high school yearbook, and it sounds about right. I said as much at her wake in 2007

My Grandfather’s Depth of Feeling made a Life for his Whole Family
In the first 18 months of my life, My Nonno was a constant presence. However, he would leave for an extended return to Italy with my grandmother in 1966. The departure must have left a pretty big void. The year and a half absence had to have been long forgotten by the time he came back, though. The assumption - it turns out - is glaringly incorrect.

John Jay Wins Fox Lane Tip Off Tournament
After defeating Poughkeepsie in a tight back and forth game in the semifinals of the Fox Lane Tip Off Tournament on Thursday Night, Saturday afternoon’s start looked like it would be a cruise for the John Jay girls. But a 20-5 first quarter lead against Blind Brook turned into some pretty choppy water for Indians. “Our girls would go on a run, Blind Brook would battle back and then we would make big shots,” said John Jay Head Coach Matt Gallagher. Of course, somebody had to laugh last when all was said and done.

Ed Cusati takes Pause while Moving his Musical Career Forward on Spotify
Ed Cusati’s introduction to music began with his mother. A singer who studied at Westminster Choir College, she started Ed with piano lessons and her large Rock n Roll record collection moved him onto the worship of Joe Satriani. Taking on the guitar, Cusati formed a band in middle school that was, “ahead of its time,” according to the Katonah, NY resident, and was pretty easily explained. “Well, I was in the band,” he joked. But the lighthearted look back is no way emblematic of how seriously he approaches his art, and putting himself out there as a performer, goes well beyond the words.

Kat Spina has a Baseline in Music, Teaching and Life
Katherine Spina got her start as musician when she auditioned for the third grade talent show. “I remember everybody being very quiet when I sang, and the teacher said, ‘nice job Katherine. You will be in the show.’” But the actual impetus obviously came as the accolades were expressed more publicly to her rendition of A Whole New World.

38 years ago I showed up at Plattsburgh State to major in Computer Science. I did well in a high school programming course but had no idea if I had the intellectual capacity to write code in college. Short of that, I had no backup plan, and the future seemed insecure.
