Marvel at your depths. June 22, 2021 apparently found me in an ultra-reflective mood. That day, before I stared at a Hawaiian sunset and wondered about the physical place I belong, I wondered instead about the people I belonged with.

The Koyo Hut
Tanemoto Shun, sighing at the crazy spin of his compass, was mid-sip of his water canteen when he ducked into his supposed shelter for the night. It most definitely had been night, the shelter little more than a collection of moldering boards. Yet he stood very suddenly in the dirt entryway of a hut, under streams of daylight through vertical slats. A siskin whistled in refrain to the rustle of trees.

Hawaiian Sunset, 6/22/2021
We’re always looking for our places to belong. 2021 was a strange year for me—COVID lockdowns were lifting, but I shared none of the liberated cheer among my more extroverted cohorts. Zoom calls chased with full bottles of wine shackled me to a fraught group friendship I questioned more with each of my drinks, but Costco had a nicely-priced resort vacation package. So at the end of June, four of us in that group packed up to enjoy five days in Hawaii.

Sunbreak
A Sun blew apart Kagurazaka Rihito’s world. Flames belched out of the quaking lighthouse island, the flare its own sun against the cape’s black waters. Smoke blotted the sky and muffled the blaring alarms. And yet, the creak of gears squealed on under the blaze and mayhem, the lighthouse beams casting streaks into the dark.

Ginkgo Leaves, 12/11/2025
Forget touching grass. Just stand under a tree shedding its leaves. Grass brushes. Leaves slap. I'm waiting for my ride, the two of us off to enjoy happy hour at a cozy local restaurant. Traffic's held her up though, so I'm standing in a swirl of leaves and sniffling through a nipped nose.

A quick search of "Okinawa" here on Vocal revealed to me some, uh… interesting results. Only a couple travel diaries? And people were apparently obsessed with an "Okinawa flat belly tonic" about two years ago?

I: Identity: Unknown June 12, 2020 – The Okinawa Association of America posted a statement in response to the then-going George Floyd protests, declaring solidarity with marginalized communities. In order to make good on their word, the group began organizing yuntaku (talk-story) Zoom events called the "Afro-Okinawan Dialogues." I huffed at “solidarity” but loved the vision: Okinawans of Black or African descent coming together at an intersection of art, music, language, culture, and racial identity to amplify Afro-Okinawan presence in the world.
