The "How Did I Get Here?" Effect

Looking At What Happens To Us On Our Crazy Journeys As Humans

By Dr. Cody Dakota Wooten, DFM, DHM, DAS (hc)Published about 15 hours ago 3 min read

Have you ever been going about your life...

In all of what it has become...

Then, suddenly asked...

"How did I get here?"

Now, as you read this question right now...

It played out in one of two ways.

You either asked yourself this and felt gratitude or awe at the various things that happened in your life that have brought you to this moment...

Or...

You asked yourself this and felt it was a gigantic disaster, wondering how each terrible thing that haunts your mind had come to this moment.

I have been on both ends of this spectrum in my life...

The blessed and the cursed.

Both ends, however...

End up having a similar set of events that occur, which lead to the culmination of the question...

"How did I get here?"

Now, I'm not saying that the events themselves are exactly the same...

We all have incredibly different lives we have lived.

But the process remains similar.

See...

It begins with our focus in life...

But not what we are directly focused on itself.

It does not matter if you are focused on your traumas or your dreams...

The past, present, or future...

What you have done or have failed to do...

It is the fact that you are so dramatically focused "on" that...

Which causes you to become consciously blind to everything else in your life.

Similar to how blinders are put on a horse to keep their focus forward...

We often put blinders on ourselves and specific things within our lives...

Which causes us to miss everything else we are doing.

Sometimes at extreme levels...

And sometimes at lesser levels...

Sometimes for better...

And sometimes for worse...

But the hyper-focus in some areas...

Makes us blind to how we are moving in our lives in other areas.

But we also have another aspect of our behavior that keeps us moving in a direction...

Even if we are not consciously focused on it.

This is the subconscious...

Often driven by habits and survival tactics we have picked up along the way in our lives...

Some which may benefit us...

And others that actively harm us.

Within the subconscious behavior that continues to move us in one way or another in our lives...

Is where we begin to lose track of what is happening in our lives.

Now, this is not inherently bad...

But for some people, it is horrible.

But the more we lose track of what is going on in our lives...

The longer we take to really stop...

The bigger the question ends up becoming...

"How did I get here?"

I'm also not saying that, if the subconscious happenings have not been great, that it is "your" fault...

Just as you may not really understand how you have had successes, because much of it was caused by things that had nothing to do with you.

There are so many things in our lives that are occurring at any given moment...

And we do not have control over the vast majority of it...

But within all of this...

We will often lose sight of much of how our lives play out...

Because it plays out subconsciously...

And so we eventually find ourselves at a point where we ask...

"How did I get here?"

Now, the problem is not that we act subconsciously...

Because it is a great mechanism that has allowed us to accomplish much more than most people realize...

But it can become a problem...

When we are so lost in our conscious thoughts...

That we allow the majority of our lives to be dictated by our subconscious...

Guided in a direction that we are unaware of where it is headed.

If you have lost sight of how you got here...

Do not worry too much...

It happens to all of us...

It is human.

Then...

Figure out where you have gotten lost...

So that you can find your way...

And know how you get to the next destination...

Hopefully ending up where you hope to be.

Funny enough, or rather timely, I have been wondering "How did I get here?" for the last couple of days with some real intensity. I am not on the bright side, which is what worries me. Anyway, I will get "out of here" and I'll see where I go next. Good reflections here, Cody!

I’ve also been on both sides of the question How did I get here. The bad side gave me PTSD for life. Great motivational reflections, Cody!
