The Return
What Comes Back When You Thought You Had Won

Written by a human, for humans, always.
---
This cannot be...
How did this happen?
I thought I had beaten this...
I thought I had won.
This is not the future that I was promised.
I was told...
That once I had succeeded...
That was it.
I could stand on the mountaintop...
And finally...
Finally...
Have peace.
But here we are again...
A feeling only too familiar...
I came crashing down the mountain...
Breaking bones along the way...
Hit...
By hit...
Until I finally landed here at rock bottom...
Face pressed into the fresh and horribly revolting manure.
Why...
Why is my face wet?
I was supposed to be happy...
Blissful...
Overcome with the feeling of fulfillment...
After every single day...
And week...
And year...
That I put into making my way to the top...
That was supposed to be it.
I was supposed to set...
For the rest of my days.
Not this...
Not here...
Not in the abyss of despair...
And pain...
And overwhelming agony.
This is not the future I was told to expect.
They all promised me...
Had me idolizing...
Expecting...
The sweet embrace of achievement...
Of triumph.
I was told that my name would be written...
Remembered...
Solidified in the stonework of time...
For all to see forevermore.
What was it all for?
I put everything...
Everything...
On the line...
I sacrificed...
I gave up...
Everything...
What so many other people have...
I allowed it to slip past me...
Because I knew...
I thought I knew...
That I would get it all at greater levels when I reached the top.
But I was at the top...
I had success...
And it is all gone...
Everything...
I have crashed down...
Fractured...
In failure.

More than reaching the top, remaining at the top is more difficult. But we should never give up when we come crashing down. We've made it to the top once, and we can make it again
