The Fortune Teller Who Was a Cheat

She sat in silk with rings on her fingers

cards spread like secrets

candles burning for effect

her voice slow and heavy

as if the future weighed in her hands

She told them love was coming

money too

a change of house

a journey over water

her eyes never leaving their faces

watching hope rise like steam

Her table was never empty

coins slid her way with every reading

she read nothing but what they wanted

no spirits whispering in her ear

only the sound of the till

One man came twice in a week

the second time with empty pockets

he told her she had lied

she told him he had not listened

the crowd believed her

and he left in shame

She built a fortune on false stars

on hands she never learned to read

and eyes that knew how to lie

one night she vanished

leaving candles half burned

and a drawer full of worthless cards

The people still tell her stories

some call her a thief

some call her clever

but no one calls her back

because they all know the truth

the fortune teller was a cheat

Maybe she was disposed of by a client

that she cheated no one knows for sure,

only that she vanished never to be seen again.

How did you get the image to look like you? I went to a fortune teller when I was younger. He took a piece of jelly or something you bought, like your watch. Walked up and down, sprouting all these different things, even gave you the Lotto numbers, which of course didn't work out.

I love this. Reminds me of a "card reader" / "seer" I visited. The first time she was so accurate (example: "I see a young man, blond hair standing behind but and behind him, a red truck. He said he'll always be watching over you." she said his name was Tommy ..... my best friend Tommy died the year before and he owned a red pick up ..... she had no way of knowing this ..... a year later, I went back to her.... she was so far off the point, she could have been from another planet. I neve went back.

Another great one that makes you want to check things out before spending time or money. Great work.
