A Simple Habit That Made My Life Better

A Simple Life Habit

By Imran Ali ShahPublished about 4 hours ago 3 min read

A few years ago, my life felt like it was moving too fast. Every morning started with the same routine: the alarm ringing, my hand reaching for the phone, and within seconds I was scrolling through messages, emails, and social media. Before I even got out of bed, my mind was already full of noise.

At first, it didn’t seem like a big problem. Everyone around me was doing the same thing. Checking the phone had become the normal way to start the day. But slowly I began to notice something strange. Even before my day had truly begun, I already felt tired and distracted.

My mornings were rushed. My thoughts were scattered. And by the end of the day, I often felt like I had been busy all day without really accomplishing anything meaningful.

One evening, while thinking about how chaotic my days felt, I realized something simple but important: the way we start our mornings can shape the rest of our day.

That thought stayed with me.

So I decided to try a very small experiment. The next morning, when my alarm rang, I made a promise to myself that I would not touch my phone for the first ten minutes of the day.

Instead, I picked up a small notebook that had been sitting on my desk for months, completely unused.

I sat quietly and wrote down three things.

First, I wrote one thing I was grateful for. Sometimes it was something simple like having a warm bed or a peaceful morning. Other times it was a person who had helped me or a moment that made me smile.

Second, I wrote one goal for the day. Not a long list, just one clear thing I wanted to accomplish before the day ended.

Third, I wrote one positive thought. It could be something encouraging, something hopeful, or even just a reminder to stay calm and focused.

The whole process took less than ten minutes.

At the beginning, it felt strange. My mind kept wanting to check my phone. I felt like I might be missing something important online. But after a few days, the habit started to feel natural.

Something unexpected began to change.

My mornings became quieter and more peaceful. Instead of filling my mind with information from the outside world, I started the day by focusing on my own thoughts and intentions.

That small habit slowly changed the way I approached the rest of the day.

When challenges appeared, I felt more prepared to handle them. When stress started to build, I remembered the positive thought I had written earlier. And when I completed the one goal I had written in the morning, I felt a sense of accomplishment that I rarely felt before.

Over time, I realized that the biggest benefit of this habit wasn’t productivity. It was clarity.

Those ten quiet minutes helped me understand what really mattered each day. Instead of reacting to everything happening around me, I started making more intentional choices.

Months later, the notebook began filling with pages. Each page contained small reminders of gratitude, effort, and hope.

Looking back, it’s surprising that such a simple habit could have such a powerful effect. I didn’t change my entire life overnight. I didn’t follow a complicated system or buy expensive tools.

I simply gave myself ten minutes each morning to slow down and think.

That small habit didn’t remove every problem from my life, but it made me calmer, more focused, and more aware of the good things around me.

Sometimes we believe that improving our lives requires dramatic changes.

But often, the real transformation begins with something small that we choose to do every day.

And sometimes, ten quiet minutes can change more than we expect.
