10 Soap Operas That Shaped Me

Drama, loyalty, chaos, and the shows that pulled me into a whole world.

Soap operas aren’t just TV shows—they’re commitments. You don’t just watch them, you grow with them. The characters evolve, the stories stretch across years, and before you know it, you’re emotionally invested in lives that feel almost real.

For me, soaps weren’t just something that was on in the background. These were shows I chose, followed, and stayed loyal to. Some pulled me in with spectacle, others with storytelling, and some with pure chaos. But all of them left a mark.

These are the ten soap operas that shaped my experience with the genre.

1. General Hospital

I really love General Hospital because it’s been so steady and consistent over the years since I started watching it. No matter what, it’s always been there. To me, it has some of the best actors on daytime right now, and even when it has its slower moments, it still stands out. The characters are some of the strongest I’ve seen in any soap, and that’s what keeps me coming back. It’s not just a favorite—it’s one of the best I’ve ever watched. Fans give it hell when it sucks, because we care dammit. But when it’s bad it’s still good 😂.

2. One Life to Live

One Life to Live really surprised me. I had heard about the characters before I actually started watching it, but once I got into it myself, I realized how great this show really is. Storytelling-wise, this is probably the best soap I’ve ever watched. I don’t know how they did it, but they knew how to weave multiple storylines together so that everything felt connected without anything overpowering something else. And what I really appreciated is that they seemed to know when to end a story too. That balance made it stand out in a way a lot of soaps don’t.

3. Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is what made me fall in love with soaps. I used to catch glimpses of The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful when my parents watched them, but this was the first one I actually tried to follow on my own. I don’t even know how I managed that since it came on during school hours—but if I was home sick or off for the day, this is what I was watching.

What made it stand out was how fresh and new it felt. I didn’t need to know years of backstory to understand what was going on, which made it easy to jump into. The characters were quirky—some more than others—but that added to the charm. This was the first soap I watched the way you’d watch a primetime show, and that’s what made it stick with me.

4. Days of Our Lives

This was another show I used to catch glimpses of as a kid, but I didn’t really get into it until I was about 14. It was the summer of 2002, and I had to go to summer school. When I got home, there wasn’t much on TV before this came on at 1, so I just started watching it—and somehow, I got hooked.

I was already a fan of Sami Brady, and her storyline at the time was so intriguing that it kept me coming back. She really pulled me into the show. From there, I stayed with it for years. Even though I don’t watch it the same way now, it’s still one of my all-time favorites because of that time in my life and how it pulled me in.

5. Passions

Passions is not like any show I’ve ever seen before—let alone any soap. Everything about it was outlandish, over-the-top, and completely out of this world. Sometimes I even wonder what it must have been like to act on a show like that, because the storylines were just that wild.

But that’s exactly why I loved it. The characters were so memorable, and no matter how crazy things got, I stayed locked in. Teresa was probably my favorite, and she’s a big reason why I kept watching. This show stands out because it dared to be different, and honestly, there’s nothing else like it in the soap world.

6. As the World Turns

There’s something about As the World Turns that always felt so expansive to me. The characters were all so different from each other, but somehow they all pulled you in. It had a real sense of family and heart, and that’s what I loved most about it.

The tone felt grounded and emotional in a way that stuck with me. It wasn’t just about drama—it made you feel things. That’s what kept me coming back.

And the characters? So many standouts. Emily, Carly, Margo, the Hughes family… Paul—I could go on. That’s how you know a show did something right when you can name that many characters you actually care about.

7. Another World

There was a period where I watched Another World with my parents, and out of all the soaps they watched, this was the one that stood out to me the most. There was just a lot going on during that time, but this show really pulled me in. I remember thinking, “I have to keep watching this.”

I ended up watching it with them more than any other soap. The characters really stood out, and the storytelling kept me interested. It had that classic soap feel, but it also had strong characters and solid stories that made it memorable.

It’s one of those shows that felt like it would always be around because of how popular it was. That’s part of why it stuck with me—it had that kind of staying power.

8. Spyder Games

I loved Spyder Games, mainly because it was MTV’s take on soap operas—and if you ask me, they did a really good job. They mixed soap veterans with newer actors, and the storylines weren’t afraid to push the envelope. That’s something I’ve always appreciated. I like when shows take risks and get a little controversial.

What really stood out to me was the representation. This was the first soap where I saw a gay character, and I remember thinking, “Oh—they’re really doing that.” It was surprising in a good way, and it made the show feel ahead of its time.

Plus, the whole gaming industry angle—whether they fully understood it or not—was such a unique direction for a soap to take. It made the show feel different from anything else out there. This is definitely one of those niche picks for me, but it left a real impression.

9. The Bold and the Beautiful

This show always felt bold and fabulous to me—no pun intended. It was stylish, fashionable, and had a look that really stood out from other soaps. I also loved the opening they used for all those years—it just set the tone perfectly.

And like a lot of the shows I love, it had strong female characters that stuck with me. That’s something I always pay attention to. Of course, you can’t talk about this show without mentioning the Ridge, Taylor, and Brooke love triangle that just seemed like it would never end. I don’t even know if it ever truly did.

It’s also one of those shows that feels huge—like globally popular. Honestly, it might be the most watched soap ever. Even though I don’t watch it as much as I used to, it definitely earned its spot.

10. Port Charles

Port Charles felt like General Hospital in a fever dream. It took everything that made the parent show work and flipped it completely on its head. The energy was higher, the storylines were wilder, and sometimes it didn’t even make sense—but that was kind of the point.

It felt like we were seeing a side of the city that General Hospital never really showed. Like, this was happening in the same world, but in a completely different lane. And honestly, that’s what made it fun. It didn’t always have to be grounded—it just had to be entertaining, and it definitely was.

🎬 Conclusion

Looking at this list, I can see my journey with soap operas clearly. I started with curiosity, stayed for storytelling, and learned to appreciate both grounded emotion and complete chaos along the way.

Some of these shows made me think. Some made me feel. Some just entertained me in ways only soaps can. But all of them played a role in shaping how I watch television—and how I connect to long-form storytelling.

This isn’t just a list of shows.

It’s a timeline of how I became a soap fan
