Dust rises. The sun burns without mercy. The desert… the most hostile natural habitat for living beings contemplates in silence. Sand muffles his steps, but not his burden.

Nobody knows his name; whispers spread the word that he was once a gravedigger; now, he has a bounty on his head. Nobody knows his age, nor what he did to be considered an outlaw; what is known are rumors, stories, legends. Legends of the former Gravedigger who wanders the desert dragging a coffin. What it contains depends on who tells the legend. Those who see him as a Saint say he carries homemade medicines made to cure all types of diseases. Those who see him as a man say he carries the body of his late wife; he killed her after going mad. For those who believe in the Old Spirit, however, it is said that he carries an empty coffin, that the Gravedigger is the Will of Death. They say that when the final hour arrives, he appears by night and puts the body inside the coffin. The Gravedigger then makes a journey through the desert to judge the life of the recently deceased.

Beyond the legends of his origin, not much is known. That is… besides his greatest target.

No matter the version of the legend—be it a miserable gravedigger, a maddened widower, or the will of death—his greatest target is the Immortal.

The Immortal is a figure as mysterious as the Gravedigger. Ninguém sabe a sua idade, nem o que ele fez para ser considerado um bandido; o que se sabe são rumores, histórias, lendas. Lendas do ex-coveiro que vaga pelo deserto arrastando um caixão. O que este contém depende de quem conta a lenda. Os que o veem como um santo dizem que leva medicamentos caseiros feitos para curar todos os tipos de doenças. Os que o veem como homem dizem que leva o corpo da falecida mulher; matou-a depois de ter enlouquecido. Para os que acreditam no Velho Espírito, no entanto, diz-se que carrega um caixão vazio, que o Coveiro é a Vontade da Morte. Dizem que, quando chega a hora final, aparece pela noite e mete o corpo dentro do caixão. O Coveiro, então, faz uma viagem pelo deserto para julgar a vida do recém-falecido.

É dito nas histórias que o Coveiro está numa perseguição incessante pelo Imortal. Na lenda em que o Coveiro é apenas um santo, dizem que vai atrás do Imortal por o mesmo se ter aproveitado da sua bondade. Na história em que o Coveiro bandido carrega o corpo da sua mulher, é dito que vai atrás do Imortal em busca de vingança. No rumor em que é a Vontade da Morte, diz-se que vai atrás do Imortal para colectar a sua alma e o punir por ir contra a ordem natural.

De qualquer das formas, não importa a lenda, o eclipse ficou associado a estas duas figuras.

Acredita-se que o eclipse acontece sempre que o Coveiro se encontra com o Imortal, mas este acaba sempre por escapar, assim dando início a outra perseguição…
